At a glance
- The Agafay is a stony desert about 45 minutes southwest of Marrakech, not a sea of sand dunes.
- It is the easiest way to sleep in the desert on a short trip.
- Expect camel rides at sunset, dinner by a fire, stargazing and the High Atlas at sunrise.
- For tall golden dunes you need the Sahara, a long drive or two days away.
- Spring and fall are best; winter nights are cold.
An Agafay desert luxury camp is the closest you can get to a night in the desert without leaving the Marrakech area. The Agafay is a rocky plateau of bare, rolling hills about 45 minutes from the medina, with the snowcapped High Atlas behind it in winter and spring. It is not the Sahara, and it does not pretend to be, but for a short trip it is a wonderful evening.
What the Agafay is, and what it is not
Instead of sand dunes, you find a landscape of stone and dust in shades of ochre and beige, cut by dry riverbeds. The silence and the light at sunset are what people remember. If tall golden dunes are what you dream of, you need Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga in the Sahara, which take a long day or two to reach.

A night at camp
Arrive in the late afternoon and settle into your tent, which at the better camps has a real bed, a private bathroom and sometimes a terrace or a plunge pool. Ride a camel or a horse across the hills at sunset, then eat dinner by lantern light: salads, tagine, grilled meats and fruit. After dinner, sit by the fire and look up. Away from the city lights, the stars are bright.
Tip
Bring a warm layer even in spring and fall. Temperatures fall quickly once the sun goes down, especially from November to March.
